California Experiences “Hurriquake”

Monday morning earthquake adds to the devastation of now Tropical Storm Hilary.

California has experienced tremendous flooding from what is now Tropical Storm Hilary. On top of that, the U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred about 4 miles southeast of Ojai, California, a city north of Los Angeles. At least a dozen aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0 were reported following the quake.

The National Hurricane Center reports that the remains of the tropical storm, which was a category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Mexico, continue moving north. The impact of this system has hit California and Nevada, with outer reaches being seen in Arizona, Idaho, and Montana. Torrential rains and heavy winds have brought life-threatening flooding.

States of emergency have been declared in California and Nevada and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell has been in contact with the governors of both states.

Hilary is the first tropical storm to hit southern California since 1939.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the governors of the states being impacted by the tropical storm.
  • For Administrator Criswell as she coordinates the emergency situation in California and Nevada.
  • For the safety of residents in the affected states, particularly in the region that experienced the earthquake and aftershocks as well as flooding.
